So you’re the proud owner of a beautiful new rug, you’ve taken it home and it’s in pride of place in your room of choice…but wait! How do you take care of it?! Here’s our handy guide to helping you take care of your rug so that you can relax and enjoy it!
1. Rotate!
Periodic rotation of your rug will mean that each area will have even exposure and traffic so that no one area is more worn than another. Also, by doing this, you and yours get to appreciate every single detail that you fell in love with when you originally purchased your beautiful centrepiece.
2. Regular vacuuming
Invest in a good vacuum cleaner from a trusted brand and vacuum your rug at least weekly on a low-power setting (Whilst we appreciate the excitement and fascination of the high powered, almost industrial-strength vacuums of today, please reserve their full potential for more hard wearing floors!). Never use a vacuum cleaner on fringe and delicate edges as this is likely to cause damage and reduce the life of your rug.
3. Act quickly!
We want you to enjoy your rug, for it to be part of special occasions, dinner parties and every day family fun. However, make sure you don’t get so caught up in the festivities that you forget to properly take care of it. Be sure to act quickly and immediately blot any spills with an un-dyed cloth pressing firmly around the area to properly absorb the spill
4. Leave it to the professionals
For harder spills and stains, refrain from rummaging through the cleaning cupboard and trying to fix them yourself. Different fabrics and dyes call for different products and levels of care. Professional rug cleaners are experts in their field and know how to remove stains whilst ensuring no further damage is done. For careful upkeep of your rug and to ensure its longevity, we recommend having them professionally cleaned at least once a year.
5. Invest in a rug pad
If your rug doesn’t have a non-slip backing, it’s a good idea to invest in a rug pad. A rug pad can limit the movement of your rug preventing wrinkling and protecting the fibres.
6. Get to know your rug
Most of our rugs have their own care labels provided by the manufacturer with cleaning and upkeep instructions specific to the fabrics and dyes used, and the method that has been used to produce them. Where this is not the case, such as for our handcrafted Arabian rugs, we will give you this information directly.
Each rug is unique and should be treated as such when cleaning and caring for it. If you follow the simple instructions above, you will benefit from years of enjoyment and comfort.
